Pulsating Stellar Atmospheres
We review the basic concepts, present state of theoretical models, and the future prospects for theory and observations of pulsating stellar atmospheres. Our emphasis is on radially pulsating cool stars, which dynamic atmospheres provide a general example for the differences with standard static model atmospheres.
متن کاملThe Solar Heavy Element Abundances : II . Constraints from Stellar Atmospheres
Estimates of the bulk metal abundance of the Sun derived from the latest generation of model atmospheres are significantly lower than the earlier standard values. In Paper I we demonstrated that a low solar metallicity is inconsistent with helioseismology if the quoted errors in the atmospheres models (of order 0.05 dex) are correct. In this paper we undertake a critical analysis of the solar m...
متن کاملATOMIC IONIZATION AND OPACITIES IN PULSAR ATMOSPHERES Hydrogen Atmospheres
In the strong magnetic elds of typical radio pulsars atomic lines and photoionization edges lie in the soft X-ray part of the spectrum giving the dominant contribution to the opacity. Improved photoionization cross sections are presented for a hydrogen atmosphere and magnetic elds of 10 11 ? 10 13 G, exhibiting novel Beutler{Fano resonance features due to the contribution of autoionizing atomic...
متن کاملStellar Fluxes as Probes of Convection in Stellar Atmospheres
Convection and turbulence in stellar atmospheres have a significant effect on the emergent flux from late-type stars. The theoretical advancements in convection modelling over recent years have proved challenging for the observers to obtain measurements with sufficient precision and accuracy to allow discrimination between the various predictions. An overview of the current observational techni...
متن کاملRadiative diffusion in stellar atmospheres : diffusion velocities
Aims. The present paper addresses some of the problems in the buildup of element stratification in stellar magnetic atmospheres due to microscopic diffusion, in particular the redistribution of momentum among the various ionisation stages of a given element and the calculation of diffusion velocities in the presence of inclined magnetic fields. Methods. We have considerably modified and extende...
